There are lots of hyped books these days – we’ve got so much social media that it’s an endless stream of content, usually talking about mostly the same things. The same goes for books. And I like that, it’s great that readers are able to share which books they love and that it can boost sales of a book for its author. But there are some books that I’ve heard so much about that I’m kind of just bored of them even though I’ve never read them. It’s not fair, and I’m sure there are lots of them I’d love if I did read them. But the oversaturation of discussion about them just has me not wanting any more. This may change – if someone I trust recommends them to me or if I hear an excerpt I love or any of a dozen other things happen, I might decide to pick one up. But at this present moment these are some books I’m really not that into.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Gilead by Marilynne Roinson
The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel

Fifty Shades of Grey (and all the other books in the series) by E.L. James
What about you guys? Have you read and loved any of my picks? Any here you also don’t really want to bother with because you’re sick of hearing about them?

It isn’t often that other bloggers mention Gilead. I was just thinking I need/want to read on in the series. I loved that book so much.
Oh I’m so glad to hear that you loved it – and that it deserved the hype! I have trouble because I have a feeling it is a beautifully written book, probably extremely well done, but… and here’s the thing… the premise just doesn’t appeal to me at all! It’s on my list of books I probably should try anyway, because I expect it’s worth it, but… I just haven’t. We’ll see! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series if you do continue, and if I ever do get to it, it’ll be because of you!
