TOP TEN TUESDAY | LITERARY AND BOOKISH CANDLES I’D MAKE

This is a bit of an odd one for me. Partly because while I see movies in my head when I read, I don’t ever think about the smells associated with them unless the story explicitly discusses one. I also don’t really get to do much with fragrances these days, since developing scent sensitivities a few years back. Now that I don’t know what will trigger my asthma and allergies, I tend to avoid new scented products. But I will try my best!

Here’s a list of books and the scent I’d give a candle based on the vibes of the books.

  1. Anne of Green Gables – cherry blossom because of the tree she dreamt of living in
  2. The House In the Cerulean Sea – Ocean and beach smells, or maybe a hint of pine for the forests on the island
  3. Jane Austen‘s work – some light, flowery scents. Traditional ones that you’d find in an older English garden, all mixed in together.
  4. Under the Tuscan Sun – fresh food-related scents like olive oil, basil, a hint of tomato vines
  5. The Chronicles of Narnia – Turkish delight, though I have no idea what actually makes it smell and taste the way it does.
  6. Dickens‘ books – something dark and a little smoky, a hint of coal and lantern oil
  7. Sherlock Holmes series – the smell of pipe smoke, that deep tobacco scent with a hint of sweetness
  8. I Capture the Castle – rose, possibly a hint of spring tulips or mint for the drinks they have later in the book.
  9. Peter Mayle’s books about Provence – lavender, because that’s what I remember from my time in the south of France. Fields and fields of it.
  10. 84, Charing Cross Road – the smell of old book pages and that hint of vanillin they develop, along with ink and leather. Basically the smell of old books.

That’s it for me this week! I’m interested to hear how you guys approached this week’s prompt! Did you also do a book-scent list, or did you take a different approach?

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly link-up feature created by The Broke and the Bookish and hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic. To see past and upcoming topics, go here.
