This is the first time in a while I’ve done a Monday post, largely because I haven’t been finishing books every week. So let me catch you up on all the (2) books I finished since last time I did one of these!
Just Shelved
The last three books I’ve finished were all from my round of novels for the Semi-Final round of the BookTube Prize. I’m not allowed to say anything about what I thought of these books for fear of influencing other judges, so suffice it to say that these aren’t necessarily books I would have picked up right now without the prize, but I’m glad I had a chance to experience them – and they made a definite impression! More to come in a few weeks.
Currently Reading
These are the books I’ve somehow gravitated towards since finishing my BookTube Prize reading. Sorrow and Bliss I’ve seen around, and picked up because it deals with a main character suffering from mental health issues. As this is an area I’m familiar with, I like finding books that have a new take on it. So far this does a good job of conveying what it’s like to live with chronic mental health problems (that are difficult to treat), but also has a lot of humour to it. A combination I appreciate, as it’s how I tend to deal with hard things in my own life. The Reading List is my current audiobook. I got it when it was on sale recently on a whim, never having heard anything about it. It’s about a list of books that’s left in a library book, and that somehow finds its way to characters who are in need of some literary therapy. So far it’s got really great pacing, sympathetic characters, and I’m enjoying the narration. Both of these are dealing with serious topics, but have a lightness to them that balances it out, so I’m enjoying them both.
Up Next
I’ve just finished prize judging for the year, which is bittersweet. On the one hand it’s encouraged me to read some great books, but it’s also meant I haven’t been able to mood read the same way I normally do, and I have several books I’m interested in getting to! I’ve loved doing two round of prize judging, but that’s been a lot of fiction (and some of the books aren’t ones I would have normally read), so I think I want to shift gears for a bit. I’m anticipating some non-fiction, and also thinking of trying to read some classics as it’s been a long time since I’ve read any! I definitely feel like I want to read some feminist writings on reproductive rights, given everything that’s happening in the USA right now regarding Roe v. Wade being overturned, and the subsequent dominoes dropping throughout the country making abortion harder (or impossible) to access legally and safely. I might pick up one of the books about reproductive rights I’ve got on my shelf soon!
That’s it for my reading (few) week(s)! What have you guys been up to? Any great reads to share? Have you read any of these? What are you excited to pick up next?
A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.
Tempting titles! Thanks for sharing, and here are my WEEKLY UPDATES
