TOP TEN TUESDAY | VILLAINS

The prompt this week is villains, but I don’t really have a lot of ideas on that topic, particularly as most of the books I read don’t have a villain in them, and the ones I can remember that did have a clear villain really don’t leave me feeling like I have much to say. But as I was thinking about it, I realized that I actually find antagonists who evoke empathy, or at the very least are interesting and possibly a little pitiable. Some of these are from books I’ve read, while others I feel like I’m familiar with from pop culture or films based on their books.

Malfoy and Snape (from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling)

Gollum (from the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien)

Heathcliff (from Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë)

Moriarty (from the Sherlock Holmes books by Arthur Conan Doyle)

Dorian Grey (from The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde)

Lestat (from the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice)

Loki (from Norse mythology and appearing in lots of contemporary fiction)

Frankenstein’s Monster (from Frankenstein by Mary Shelley)
