LINK-UP | IT’S MONDAY! WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Another busy week! But in a good way – we had another birthday, my kid had a couple of fun field trips, and we had a bit of unscheduled time off home school because by the end of the week, we were quite frankly knackered. So my kid got to spend a lot of time outside with neighbourhood friends and exploring a creek and tiny wooded area behind our yard which has been dubbed “funlands.” I got to spend time catching up on a mountain of housework and getting things done in the garden – including making a new and larger bean teepee for my kid – the old one was too small! Hopefully growth of child won’t outpace growth of beans this year! We also had some crazy weather – thunder and lightning last weekend, then a massive hail storm that left a white layer over all the cars and rooves we could see from our windows. In May! Nuts, I tell ya. Not as much reading, but I enjoyed what I did read.

The Farmer’s Wife by Helen Rebanks

I’d  nearly finished this one last week, so I polished it off on Monday. I enjoyed most of this one. There’s some bits at the end that lost me a bit – not because any fault in the writing or content, but more a difference in lifestyle choices. I’m vegetarian, so while I support farmers raising sustainable and ethical meat for local consumption, and I think that’s a great and healthy thing, I have only so much interest in hearing about it as it doesn’t apply to me directly. But for anyone who’s a meat eater and particularly who cares about this issue personally, then it’ll be grand. The rest I was fully in for and there was a lot I admired and related to.

Currently Reading

The Lie of the Land by Amanda Craig
Wings of Fire: The Hidden Kingdom (Graphic Novel #3) by Tui T. Sutherland
The Garden Against Time by Olivia Laing

I’m still working on the first two, though haven’t made much progress this week (see below for what physical books I have been reading). I started the third as an audiobook because I wanted something else sort of calming and down to earth (pun intended) that would be good to listen to when I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. I loved the beginning of it, but then it takes a tangent into literary gardening that frankly I can’t tell you any more about because I just don’t care. I’m hoping it’ll get back to her own garden soon!

Up Next

Garlic & the Vampire by Bree Paulsen
The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag
Bad Badger by Maryrose Wood
This Is Body Grief by Jayne Mattingly

Still no idea what I’ll read next, but here are two possible contenders! I’m also on the lookout for some plant and gardening books. I’ve borrowed a bunch from the library about keystone native plants, invasive plants, plants common in my area, and invasive plants. They’re all reference books though, so not ones I’ll “read” in their entirety, but nevertheless they are taking up some of my reading time. Very interesting reading though! I’ll try to share them next week when I’ve got them with me to look up and I’m not half asleep!

That’s my week! I’m off to get some sleep then tomorrow I’m planning to get out and plant some tomatoes in the garden while little one is at a local park probably climbing (and falling off of) things! Anyone else starting to plant their garden? Any new plants you’ve added this year that you’re excited about?

A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. I also link up with The Sunday Salon post each week hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz (and sometimes include some of her content prompts).
