This week’s prompt: What’s your typical process for writing a book review, from reading the book to publishing the review on your blog?
Hmmm. Well, I guess you’d call it procrastinatory. I read a whole bunch of books, then I realize I haven’t written reviews for any, so I’ll try to write a bunch at once. Often during this process I realize I’ve irrevocably forgotten most of the important stuff about a couple of them, so they won’t ever be reviewed. The rest I’ll remember enough to write a decent account of. Occasionally I’ll read a book I absolutely loved and that stuck with me – I might have even marked some passages or scribbled some notes – then you’ll get a better and more detailed review. Maybe once a year or so I’ll become so frustrated with myself that I’ll decide to start reviewing books as I read them, and this will last for no more than three weeks, but during that time I’ll catch up and get enough reviews to last for two or more months. Then the pressure is off and I don’t write another one until I’m down to the last few reviews, and the whole cycle will start again. As you can see, it’s a well-honed process.
What about you guys? Are you more disciplined about writing reviews in a timely manner? Do you take careful notes and mark passages so that you can refer back to the text with ease? Or do you do a more mad-dash approach like myself?
The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly blog link-up that gives participants a different book-related question to ponder each week, and allows them to share their thoughts, find new blogs to follow and connect with new readers. The Hop was originally created by Jennifer at Crazy for Books and is now hosted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. To see a list of upcoming prompts go here.
