LINK-UP | IT’S MONDAY! WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Though it’s mid-May, and we’ve got lush foliage on the trees, beautiful flowers in bloom, berries forming on branches and birds and bees zooming around, this last week felt like the very early days of Spring again. It’s been grey and rainy, with only a few breaks of sunshine which was accompanied by a strong and chilly wind. We even had a proper thunderstorm this weekend! So we are back to wanting to cuddle up inside with hot chocolate/tea and some good books. I’m not that sad – I actually like it as it’s a bit of a reprieve from the pollen (it’s still there if I go outside, but the rain lessens how  much is in the air, which is a pleasant break for this asthmatic!). My kid spends a lot of time drawing and colouring, and has recently started to want to look at pictures of other people’s art. I got a pile of art history books out of the library, and we’ve been cuddling up and looking through pages of famous works of art (as well as graffiti – I’ve got plenty of those books, too!). I’m enjoying it very much, and noticing the skill in paintings that I haven’t thought about or looked at images of in years.

Shy Creatures by Clare Chambers
Sipsworth by Simon van Booy

These two mark the end of my BookTube Prize reading! I’ve finished all six, just in time as I have to turn in my rankings next week. I’m glad I did it, though I can’t yet share my opinions until rankings are in!

Currently Reading

The Lie of the Land by Amanda Craig
The Farmer’s Wife by Helen Rebanks
Wings of Fire: The Hidden Kingdom (Graphic Novel #3) by Tui T. Sutherland

Now that I’ve finished my BookTube reading, I’m hoping to circle back to these ones that I’ve been slowly chipping away at. I know I’ll finish The Farmer’s Wife this week as I’m nearly at the end (I might even finish that one up today), and I’m also nearing the end of the third Wings of Fire graphic novel – I suspect my kiddo will hand me the fourth once I’m done, so that might also be in my upcoming reading!

Up Next

The Garden Against Time by Olivia Laing
Bad Badger by Maryrose Wood
This Is Body Grief by Jayne Mattingly

I’ve really enjoyed my BookTube reading, as I always do, but there’s also this moment of exhilaration when I complete the sixth and final book and realize that all of a sudden I can choose any book I want to read next! I can read three at once! I can start and abandon them if I want to! I think that feeling of excitement about where my reading will go next is part of what I love about the experience, as strange as that sounds, and the feeling of pride at having completed all of the books I set out to read (TBRs are very challenging to me, so while six books may not sound that many, it is for me!). Anyway, these are three books I’ve currently been considering – the first one I’ve had my eye on for ages and finally used an audiobook credit for, and the other two were completely random books I stumbled across at the local library and decided to check out. No idea if I’ll like them, but I’m looking forward to giving them a try!

Garlic & the Vampire by Bree Paulsen
The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag

These two are ones I nearly forgot I’ve had waiting for me from the library as well, so they’re last minute additions! I read Garlic & the Witch after my kid loved it, and really enjoyed it. I didn’t realize it was the second book in a series at the time, but once I found that out I reserved Garlic & the Vampire from the library immediately. My kid did not like this one as much as the first one we read, but I still want to give it a try. And in a post a while back where I shared that I had read Garlic & the Witch, someone said they wanted to read it because when they looked up the blurb, it mentioned a similarity to The Witch Boy and they had loved that book (I’m sorry I can’t remember which blogger it was who left that comment and can’t find it at the moment, so if it was you please say so in the comments so people know!). That made me curious, so I also reserved The Witch Boy from the library and have been excited to give that a try!

So that was my week of reading! I’m looking forward to this coming week as there are more family birthdays and I am planning a bit of a reading free-for-all, so I expect I’ll start and abandon several books! What about you guys? Did you have a good reading week? Anyone else experiencing sudden and unexpected inclement weather?

A weekly post that encourages bloggers to share what they have read in the past week, what they’re currently reading and books they’ve recently added to their TBRs. Originally started by Sheila at Book Journey, it is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. I also link up with The Sunday Salon post each week hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz (and sometimes include some of her content prompts).
