TOP TEN TUESDAY | ANIMAL COMPANIONS IN BOOKS

I love this prompt! I love animals, and they can be such wonderful companions. They ask so little of us, and yet they offer us so much. Love, companionship, comfort, joy, loyalty. So when there’s a book that includes one of these wonderful relationships between an animal and a person, it always feels very special. That said, I often avoid books that have animals, because there’s this horrible risk that something bad will happen to the animal which I cannot handle. So these are some books that do include a wonderful relationship but that either don’t have anything bad happen to the animal or do it in a way that I didn’t find to be traumatically written. And a couple I haven’t read yet, but that I’d like to.

Books I’ve Read

The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy
Free Days with George by Colin Campbell
Sipsworth by Simon Van Booy

How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
A Piglet Called Truffle by Helen Peters
Snapdragon by Kat Leyh

The Drop by Dennis Lehane
Wildful by Kengo Kurimoto
Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton

Books I Want to Read

Alfie & Me by Carl Safina
Nigel by Monty Don

I thought about including brief descriptions of these books and why I chose them, but I didn’t want to give anything away for some of them, and for others I can’t remember the details well enough, just that I loved them. At any rate, all of these books I’ve read were lovely and featured a beautiful relationship with an animal that brought something wonderful to someone’s life.

What about you guys? Did you focus on positive animal representations this week, or go for something different? Were any of my picks on your list?

Now that I’ve finished this I’m going to go and put the daddy long-legs spider that suddenly appeared over my desk as I was writing this outside!
