Kissing is an underrated art form. It is so often hurried – or skipped over entirely – in favour of the main event. As an avid fan of the kiss, I think this is a real shame.

Kissing (aside from being really, really fun) can tell you so much about a person. Not only who they are, but how they’re feeling. You can tell if someone is distracted (a quick peck on the mouth or, if they’re really distracted, cheek). You can tell if they’re hesitant (quick darts of the tongue, followed by retreat) or if they urgently wish to devour you (pretty self-explanatory, really).

In Violet Blue’s book Kissing: A Field Guide, she encourages us all to return to the lost art of the kiss and give it the attention it deserves. She encourages us to both wallow and rejoice in it, to appreciate its ability to communicate in a manner not as often used by lips and to show our kissing partner exactly how we feel about them.

The book itself contains all sorts of fun little tidbits:

  • A quiz to determine your kiss personality
  • A series of fun (and exciting) kissing games
  • How to figure out when to lay one on a new romantic prospect
  • How to kiss well – and make it enjoyable for the other person
  • Tips to keep your mouth and lips in perfect kissing condition

And much, much more. It won’t take you long to devour this slim volume, but what you learn you’ll never forget.

If you’re a romantic, looking to spice up your make-out sessions or just a huge fan of the meeting of the lips, you’ll find something unexpected and surprisingly useful between these pages. Plus, putting research into practice has never been more exciting!
